(I’m Joe Facendola by the way) In regards to the effectiveness of gastric lavage, it seemed to work very well. I was most confident in my ability to completely retrieve all gut contents from the smaller fish, as you could actually feel any prey items through the drums body. I did sacrifice some live fish after flushing their stomachs, and found them to all be empty. Most of the larger fish I examined were from dead from DMF long line surveys, so the entire stomachs were removed. However, I was able to retrieve gut contents from the handful of large fish that I captured live using gastric lavage. Sometimes really long (eels), or really spiny (crabs) prey would take a few attempts to flush out, but all in all I would say that the lavage technique was effective and generally non-lethal.Joenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3124753489197409263.post-88891740368127479142010-05-26T16:35:05.593-04:002010-05-26T16:35:05.593-04:00thanks, that was a treat!thanks, that was a treat!Katie Kleberhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16686064958237570922noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3124753489197409263.post-3612586067969216452010-05-24T00:18:59.175-04:002010-05-24T00:18:59.175-04:00also, like the turtles and sharks know it is a *we...also, like the turtles and sharks know it is a *weeknight* and not a weekend? sillyKatie Kleberhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16686064958237570922noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3124753489197409263.post-79891045642028285882010-05-14T02:15:47.868-04:002010-05-14T02:15:47.868-04:00...because predation is awesome.

And just listen to the less than objective language: dogfish referred to as "vexations" and "vermin"; official talk of "nuisance control and eradication...bounty for catching and disposing of said dogfish". Sure, dogfish are voracious and opportunistic, but so are bluefish (which also eat themselves). Yet somehow, like cod and other groundfish they are more noble and "fundamental species" in "our ecosystem". And what's this ridiculous red herring about horseshoe crab eggs?<br />I'm sure there is more than enough blame for marine ecosystem collapse to go around, but the myopia of the modern fishing industry is just appalling. It's high time to quit vilifying sharks and to take responsibility for its own disgraceful record of creating "...a devastating effect on marine life spanning continents."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3124753489197409263.post-72423989531571892932010-04-20T16:45:59.343-04:002010-04-20T16:45:59.343-04:00Don't forget that the dead zone off the Pacifi...Don't forget that the dead zone off the Pacific NW coast is also a major factor of their recent increased range.
